Beginning and Intermediate Clay Classes

Mighty Mud offers 6-week long instructor-led clay classes focusing on wheel throwing, hand building, and sculpture. Classes are three hours in length for 6-weeks and students have access to the studio during our open-studio hours for 8 weeks total (6 weeks of class plus 2 weeks at the end). New and returning students receive a 25lb bag of clay as well as a shelf to store their tools, clay, and works in progress for the length of class. New students additionally receive a tool kit (and a bat if you are in a wheel throwing class). 6-week classes are perfect for beginner and experienced students alike.

Sunday Wheel Throwing with Anais Lux

Instructor: Anais Lux
Anais will take you through the entire process of learning how to make pottery on the wheel. This includes wedging clay, centering, pulling up, making cups, bowls, vases, trimming your work, and glazing it. Your first bag of clay, pottery tool kit, and 8 weeks of studio time are all included.

This is a 6-week course. Each sequential course will take place on the following week on the same day/time.

Sunday Wheel Throwing Class with Megan Schefter

Instructor: Megan Schefter
For beginners, Megan will instruct centering, cups, bowls, plates, firing and glazing. For Intermediate students she will work to hone and improve your previous skills, work on surface techniques and learn more technical skills ie. Thrown and altered, incorporating hand-built and thrown forms, and many other techniques.

This is a 6-week course. Each sequential course will take place on the following week on the same day/time.

Sunday Hand Building Class with Megan Schefter

Instructor: Megan Schefter
“Handbuilding back to basics”
A review and new perspective for returning students and in depth introduction to new students of all things hand built (no wheel)
Includes Slab roller with soft and firm slab building, extruder and coil and all things built with that process. Combining techniques, pinch, coil, slab, etc… Reductive Carving, slump and hump molds, if it’s not done on the wheel you’ll learn it in this class.

Monday Intermediate Wheel Throwing Class w/ Ellie Kotsianas-Christner

Instructor: Ellie Kotsianas-Christner

Join Ellie on Monday nights to enhance your pottery skills on the wheel. We will dive into throwing larger forms such as vases, bowls and developing forms. You will learn skills and tricks on how to handle larger amounts of clay, as well as learning to make more complex forms like lidded jars, platters, bottle neck forms, and sets. Don’t be intimidated by this class. The only way to get better is to push yourself out of your comfort zone!

Class Requirement
–  Center at least 2 lbs of clay
– Able to pull clay consistently
– Taken at least 2 previous 6 weeks wheel classes

Tuesday Beginning Hand Building Class with Kelly Sullivan

Instructor: Kelly Sullivan
In this 6-week class Kelly will show you how create pieces that can be used for cooking, serving or just to brighten up your kitchen. Most ceramic artists love to cook or bake and this class will teach things like butter dishes, pie plates, casseroles, oil & vinegar cruets with stoppers and serving platters. We will mostly use slab construction but there will be other techniques used. We will also explore surface decorations to make your pieces unique.

This is a 6-week course. Each sequential course will take place on the following week on the same day/time; this class skips over May 26th.

Instructor: Amanda Humphreys
Join Amanda Tuesday nights for a class on hand building techniques and slab construction. Learn how to make functional items such as mugs, plates & platters, salt & pepper sets, butter dishes and flower bricks. Surface design techniques and glazing basics will be discussed as well. First bag of clay, glazes, firings and 8 weeks of studio time are all included with the class.

A review and new perspective for returning students and in-depth introduction to new students of many aspects of hand built and wheel thrown ceramics.

Students will learn hand building techniques such as working with soft and firm slabs, coil forms, combining techniques, pinch, coil, slab, etc… reductive carving, slump and hump molds, and more. On the wheel, students will learn the techniques of wedging clay, centering, pulling up, making cups, bowls, vases, trimming your work, and glazing it. Your first bag of clay, pottery tool kit, and 8 weeks of studio time are all included.
